Looking worse for wear at the CPH fire service's training area, this former Sterling DC-6 served as part of the Nordic churches relief operations during the Biafran War in the late 1960s where they established a joint operation called Scan Church Aid. Later this was expanded to include the German churches and Caritas' relief operation in Joint Church Aid, JCA. JCA was colloquially known as Jesus Christ Airlines by the crews. Photographer unknown

When Biafra seceded from Nigeria in 1967, a bitter war started leading to a humanitarian crisis. Responding to this crisis, the Biafran Airlift came to be. The Nordic protestant churches chartered suitable transport aircraft and established a joint operation called Scan Church Aid. Later this was expanded to include the German churches and Caritas' relief operation in Joint Church Aid, JCA. JCA was colloquially known as Jesus Christ Airlines by the crews. Sterling supplied several DC-6s and OY-EAR is seen here being scrapped at CPH after serving in Biafra. Photographer unknown

Flughjalp (Aid by Air in Icelandic) was established by Loftleiðir in support of the Biafran Air Bridge. The aircraft were leased by Nordchurchaid, the Nordic churches joint relief operation and part of Joint Church Aid. This particular DC-6 first flew in 1952 and was delivered to ARAMCO as N709A in September 1952. To Transair Sweden as SE-BDZ in August 1961, then Boreas as N948BC in July 1965 and Transavia a year later as PH-TRC. Flughjálp bought the airliner while it was on lease to Joint Church Aid in June 1969. When the Biafran War was over, it went to the Peruvian Air Force as FAP-378.

Still in its former operator Wenela's livery, this Transair Cargo Skymaster is a little conundrum. First delivered to the USAAF as 46-17166 in September 1944, to American Airlines as N90420 in November 1945, then Slick Airways; American International; California Hawaiian before joining Wenela as ZS-EKJ, VP-YUU, and A2-ZEQ. Sold as 9Q-CAQ around 1977/78 reprted operating for AMAZ, Transair Cargo, and Kinair before broken up at Kinsasha ca 1981. The exact dates are sketchy. Photographer unknown
