This aircraft was delivered to the Luftwaffe on 28th November, 1939. It force landed on a frozen lake on the Kola Peninsular and sank when the ice thawed. It was recovered in 1993 and restored in Hungary before being transferred to the Technical Museum in Berlin.

Oberfeldwebel Karl Hier of I/JG 76 had to land his Bf 109E at Wœrth, Alsace on 22 November 1939. It was test-flown by the French at Orléans - Bricy, then handed over to the RAF on 2 May 1940. In 1942 it was shipped to the USA for testing at Wright Field. Note the faux swastika painted on by the Americans - they liked to dress up captured aircraft and amazingly, even in this stage of the war it was apparently not a safety concern. This 109 was built in 1938 under licence by Erla Maschinenwerk GmbH in Leipzig. It is one of about forty Emils sent in 1939 to Spain to fight with the Condor Legion alongside the Nationalists. At the end of the conflict it remained in Spain until 1959 with the EdA and is now on display at the Deutsches Museum - Flugwerft Schleissheim in these fake Luftwaffe markings.

The Flying Heritage Collection's 'Luftwaffe Day' was a historic occasion as it was the first time since WWII that a FW-190 and a Bf-109 have flown together. It was magnificent!

This aircraft saw combat with JG26 in the Battles for France and Britain claiming five victories. On 30th Sept. 1940 it suffered engine failure in combat and belly landed near East Dean, Sussex. The pilot, Horst Perez, was shot, wounded and captured as he tried to exit the damaged plane.

This aircraft was shot down and belly landed in Sussex on 30th September, 1940. It is preserved in the Imperial War Museum Duxford collection.
