In late 1975, Marine Strike Fighter squadron (VMFA) 134 Smoke flew the A-4F Skyhawk before its switched to Phantom II in 1983. The squadron transitioned to F/A-18A Hornet in late 1989. This Phantom was built in 1968 as F-4J and converted to F-4S in the late seventies. 155847 moved in July 1991 to MCAS Cherry Point (NC) for storage and by 2003 it was converted to QF-4S. By late 2003, it was reported as dumped at San Nicolas Island (CA) and officially removed from USN/USMC inventory.

In late 1975, Marine Strike Fighter squadron (VMFA) 112 Cowboys switched from F-8D/E Crusader to the F-4 Phantom II. On 18 January 1992, the squadron retired the last F-4S squadron in active service. The squadron transitioned to F/A-18A Hornet by October 1992. VMFA-112 moved from NAS Dallas (TX) to nearby NAS Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base (JRB) in September 1996. 155847 moved in July 1991 to MCAS Cherry Point (NC) for storage and by 2003 it was converted to QF-4S.
