The first U-16 in Spanish AF service came from the USAF in 1954 and formed two SAR units, one covered the area around the Canaries and the other in the Ballearics. The type was finally retired from service in 1979 and replaced in the SAR role by C212 and P-3s. This example is on display at the Museo del Aire.

The Albatross which forms part of the superb outdoor collection at the Museo del Aire has recently been moved into a slightly better position for photos, possibly as a result of the Do 24 going indoors for restoration. Still carrying the former US serial, she served Esc 55/801 in the SAR role from Son San Joan airbase, Palma de Majorca. A total of 28 HU-16s were operated by the Spanish from 1954 to 1978
