Painted to represent an aircraft of the "Golden Centennaries" team, this is actually the prototype Tutor, stored in a yard outside the NAFM building. The prototype differed from the production airframes, primarily by the use of a Pratt & Whitney JT12A engine instead of the Orenda-built J85 jet. It made its first flight on 13th January 1960 as a private venture. Previously pole-mounted at Portage La Prairie/Southport Airport, Manitoba. The other prototype, CL-41R CF-LTX-X, was modified as a CF-104 radar nose trainer but that role was given instead to three "Pinocchio" C-47s.

The RCAF Golden Centennaires were formed to celebrate Canada's Centennial in 1967. At the end of the year the unit was disbanded and a few years later the Canadian Snowbirds came into being, using the Tutor which is still being used for Canada's display team.

This prototype CL-41 Tutor flew with Canadair as CF-LTW-X from first flight in January 1960 until the flight test program ended April 28, 1964. Stored in Montreal, the aircraft was donated to the Canadian Armed Forces in 1970. Mounted on a pole at CFB Portage, the trainer was painted in RCAF Golden Centennairs colors and retroactively given the serial 114000. Pictured at CFB Trenton, it is being restored by the National Air Force Museum to a more original configuration.

This I believe is the prototype Tutor and carried the civil registration CF-LTW-X during its test flying time. It differed from the production airframes mainly by the use of a Pratt & Whitney JT12A engine instead of the Orenda built J85 engine. After retirement it was donated to the RCAF for display and acquired these 'Golden Centenaire' markings, serial and code.
