The third Avro 707 airframe, following on the 707B, VX790. First flight on 4 June 1951. During 1954 its wing was given a kinked leading edge as adopted on Vulcan. Transferred to RAAF for research flights at Laverton in 1956, painted silver rather than red. Survives in RAAF Museum collection.

Built locally in 1953 at Woodford for experimental purposes to test the delta wing configuration for the up coming Vulcan bomber. The Avro 707 was a one third scale model for the bomber. After being WFU it was preserved at the RAF museum at Cosford. In 1982 it went to Brize Norton for restoration before being transferred to the Museum of Science & Industry. Moved in 2022 to the Boscombe Down Aviation Collection at Old Sarum.

The Avro 707 was the first British delta-winged aircraft. Its history is intertwined with that of the Vulcan and it was essentially a one third scale Vulcan for research into the new delta concept. The first example flew in September 1949 but crashed later that month. The example seen here, at the RAF Museum Cosford Collection was the sole C model, designed for two crew.

This type was developed to familiarise pilots with delta-winged aircraft handling as well as 'fly-by-wire' control systems and contributed, along with the A & B predecessors, greatly to the development of the Vulcan bomber. The 'Flight Test' hangar was my favorite of all the halls at Cosford with many unique and fascinating aircraft.
