2 August 1947: At 1:46 p.m., G-AGWH, operating British South American Airways Flight CS59, departed Buenos Aires, Argentina enroute Santiago, Chile. At 5:41 p.m., Santiago airport received a routine Morse code signal indicating the flight would arrive in four minutes. It never arrived. Its fate remained a mystery until 1998, when two mountain climbers on Mount Tupungato, one of the highest mountains in South America, 50 miles east of Santiago, found a wrecked Rolls-Royce Merlin engine in the melting ice of a glacier at 15,000 ft.

The Avro 627 Mailplane was developed in 1931 by Avro from the Avro Antelope bomber as a mail plane for use in Canada. Only one was built which, following trials in Canada, was returned to England. The Mailplane was converted in 1933 into a high-speed test bed for the Armstrong Siddeley Tiger engine, the revised aircraft being known as the Avro 654. Dismantled at Woodford in 1934.

R9816 was an RAF Anson I that was converted to an Anson IV at Woodford by exchanging the Armstrong Siddeley Cheetah engines for Wright R-975 Whirlwinds. After testing in the UK, it was shipped Canada where it received the serial 10257. Canadian produced Ansons were fitted with Jacobs L-6 and Pratt and Whitney R-985 radials to avoid transatlantic transport vulnerabilities. The Wright powered model remained a one-off. Note that some sources incorrectly state that the conversion to an Anson IV took place in Canada. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

Operated by BAe Dunsfold. ZG200 made a short visit to Woodford on the day of the annual airshow but did not take part in the show. This aircraft was written off at Dunsfold during a demonstration to the Swiss Air Force a few days later on July 2nd 1986. Sadly with the loss of the pilot.
