LATI ran a service between Rome and South America between late 1939 and late 1941, with an Atlantic crossing via Sal and Fernando de Noronha - also see photo 296698 of an SM.75 in Portugal. Hart Preston's close-up photos of this SM.82 show that it wears airline titles and military serial MM60309. Very impressive heavy bomber and transport aircraft with a maximum take-off mass of more than 18 tonnes. A slow but capable beast, the Luftwaffe operated hundreds of them and the Italian air force even kept some in operation until the early 1960s. Carries its original serial again since having been restored here.

Dominating this part of the exhibition. Visible are the double deck layout and the roll-up door for inflight use. The PW version is a post-WW2 modified version with Pratt & Whitney R-1830 engines, in stead of the Alfa Romeo or Piaggio ones.
