This aircraft was built for the RAF, being manufactured under a USAAF contract as an A-30A, serial 43-8445. It was assigned the RAF serial FW289 as a Baltimore Mk.5. It was one of two aircraft retained by Martin for use in developing the Baltimore Mk.6. However, the Mk.6 project was ended in April 1944 whereupon this aircraft was transferred to the US Navy. The Navy assigned a new serial number, but retained the USAAF nomenclature and designated it as simply an "A-30". It was assigned to the Naval Air Test Center and mainly used to test new airfoils. My father Algy Spurr took this photo of a Baltimore landing or taking off framed by the wing of what I think is a B-24. Baltimore 'L' of 55 Sqn RAF. Probably Mk V FW354/L (based at Biferno in Italy in April 1944). SOC 30.6.44.

My father, Algy Spurr's photo. Must be Italy 1943/4. How awesome is this photo, you can actually see the bombs falling! Any ideas of exactly where this is and the Baltimore variant would be appreciated.

Photo taken by my father Algy Spurr in WW2. Almost certainly FA604 in which case it is Baltimore Mk.4 (Martin A-30A-5) c/n 4291 ex 41-28186 - SOC 19 July 1945. Location believed to be at Biferno, Italy. It seems to be a photo signed by 223 Sqn's crew: R.S. Gray (navigator) and three Rhodesians - S.R. Webber (pilot), R.E. Davison (WOP/AG) and K.G. Peters (AG).

Taken by my father Algernon Spurr circa 1944 - Baltimore V - FW332 - R Redwing 232 Wing - base was possibly Cecina, Tuscany, Italy. This aircraft seems to have done many missions. Flown by 13 Sqn RAF, with red/yellow wheel cover (and triangle red/yellow emblem on tail, hidden on this photo by the wing).
