A68-197, which was used for photo reconnaissance in RAAF service, was earmarked for a civilian aerial survey career. That never happened and it fell into disrepair. In the 1970s it received a RR Dart engine but never flew with it. Instead it was exported to the US and restored as TF-51 N50FS for astronaut Frank Borman

A67-187 had spent much of the time since it was disposed of by the RAAF in 1958 as a source of spares for Illawarra Aviation, which operated two Mustangs under a targeting towing contract. It was sold in 1969 to a businessman who planned to install a RR Dart from a Viscount. The registration VH-UFO was reserved but the project was never finished. The aircraft was exported to the US. It flew again as a stock Merlin engined Mustang N919WJ.

Ex RAAF A68-187 and disposed of in 1958. Adastra Aerial Surveys planned to use it for aerial photography as VH-AGJ but this did not happen. It was ferried to Bankstown for spares for Illawarra Aviation's target-towing Mustangs. Businessman Hockey Treloar bought it in 1969 with a plan to install a RR Dart turboprop from a Viscount. The registration VH-UFO was reserved. The project was not completed and the aircraft was sold in the US as N919WJ. There it was rebuilt as a two-seat TF-51 with a Merlin engine. Astronaut Frank Borman owned and raced it.
