The world's longest aircraft. Caught at Cardington on the day before its first flight, it was damaged on its second flight on 24th August 2016 and not flown again until May 2017. On 18th November 2017 it broke free from its moorings and was damaged again and consequently in 2019 it was officially retired.

We flew in this airship on my wifes birthday on a circular route around rural Bedfordshire. Alas, no longer possible! Shown here at her mobile mooring mast.

One of two airship sheds at the former RAF Cardington, built in 1916 as part of the UK's airship project. Each is 812 ft long, 180 ft wide and 157 ft high and contains 4000 tons of steel. It was from here that the R101 left on her ill fated voyage to India, only to crash at Bauvais in France in October 1930. This resulted in the dismantling of sister ship R100 and the end of the airship programme.

In the top RH corner are the famous Airship sheds from which the R101 set out on her ill fated maiden voyage to India on October 4th 1930. Cardington has no runway; airships were launched from a field adjacent to the sheds just out of picture.
