The annual Open Day gave an opportunity to see the instructional airframes inside the workshops at the now-closed No.1 School of Technical Training, RAF Halton. Note the Jaguars behind, already retired after a ridiculously short active service life of only around 10 years.

Previously XJ727 with 2 FTS, coded 'L', this Whirlwind was retired to No.1 SoTT at Halton for ground instructional use in 1980.

Built 1961. Served with RAFC, 6 FTS, CATCS. To Halton as 8510M October 27th 1977. Serial XP567 still showing under the wings. To Everet Aero April 1993. To N8272M May 8th 1995. Reg.Canx. February 2nd 2018. Preserved at Cheraw M.A.P. South Carolina.

Inside one of the workshops at the now-closed No.1 School of Technical Training, RAF Halton. It's the only Hunter I can remember seeing with the 112 Squadron Sharksmouth markings! Don't be confused by the box marked WT746, that's for the adjacent aircraft.

Inside one of the large workshops at Halton, used for apprentice technical training. The School of Technical Training moved to Cosford in 1993, and most of Halton's aircraft were disposed of, replaced by more recently withdrawn types at Cosford.

This Hunter has the white/yellow/black markings of its final active service unit, 71 squadron, which retired its Hunters many years before, in 1957, and which has never been reformed. WT746 was first used for ground instruction at St.Athan in 1962, and was transferred to Halton in 1977. It still exists in 2020, preserved at Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum, Scotland.
