A1-8 was one of 18 Demons manufactured by Hawker Aircraft Ltd at their Kingston factory and shipped to Australia in 1935. Repaired after an accident in 1936, it was written off after a further crash in early 1937 in bad weather over Tasmania. Accompanying Demon A1-3 suffered the same fate. Some parts were salvaged but it was not until 1977 that remaining elements of the wreck were recovered using an Iroquois helicopter in the wooded mountainous terrain. On 3rd Feb 1987, 50 years to the day of the crash, a fully restored A1-8 was handed over to the RAAF Museum, the pilot even being present too.

A1-3 struck and killed two spectators while taking off for an air display at Swansea during a tour of Tasmania. The aircraft suffered major undercarriage and propeller damage but the pilot and observer were able to return to the aerodrome. The pilot was charged over the deaths. He was acquitted. A1-3 was repaired. Almost a year to the day it forced landed for a lack a fuel during a flight to Tasmania. Swansea's first aerodrome, on a property called Red Banks, was replaced by a new aerodrome at Cambria, another farming property. Photo from: Lindsay Millar

1 Squadron undertook several cross-country formation flights. In December 1936 it was from its base at Laverton to Adelaide-Parafield and back via the old Mildura aerodrome. A year later they ventured all the way to Brisbane-Archerfield and this photo from the Queensland library would normally suggest these aircraft are at Archerfield. However A1-32, second in the line, had been destroyed in a fatal crash at Hamilton, Victoria, on August 31. A1-22 crashed at Point Cook on July 18, 1942. Photo from: State Library of Queensland
