L5463 lost an undercarriage leg when it hit a bump taking off on a mission on the night of May 25, 1940. The pilot returned and landed off the runway, collapsing the other leg. The aircraft must have been too valuable to abandon because it did make it back to the UK before the fall of France. 88 Sqn arrived back in June 1940. L5463 was shipped to Canada in 1942 where a turret was fitted for use as a gunnery trainer with the serial 2134. Suffered a belly landing at Mont Joli on November 22, 1943 and was written off. There are no markings visible on these Royal Air Force Fairey Battles. These markings have probably been retouched by the British censor. A promotional photo taken during the 'Phoney War'?

On display at RAFM Hendon. This aircraft has been painstakingly reconstructed from remains of L5343 that had crashed in Iceland, and from L5340 disposed of by the RCAF. The Battle entered RAF service in May 1937 with No. 63 Sqn. These obsolete aircraft were decimated over France by the Luftwaffe. The type is notable for scoring RAF's first aerial victory in Sept. 1939 and for the award of its first VCs to F/O D.E. Garland and Sgt T. Gray posthumously for the attack on Veldwezelt bridge on 12 May 40.
