Delivered to TABSO, the forerunner of Balkan in 6.65, this one-time beauty was preserved in a playground near Sofia airport after withdrawal but unfortunately was damaged by arsonists a few months before this shot

This 1975-build Tupolev is still current with Air Koryo and had call-sign P5-CVA allocated at one time

Jes Air was a short-lived private enterprise which operated flights to New York and Singapore for just over a year from 6.91, using three leased A310s. This one was an Air Niugini aircraft (P2-ANA) which nowadays flies as a freighter for FedEx (N803FD)

First noted with Balkan in 1978, Hemus operated this Yak until a 2007 when she was placed in storage at Sofia after lease to Albanian Airlines. Now displayed outside Terminal 1 at the airport

Acquired from the Czech government in 1983, this 134 was one of the last active with Balkan and was derelict at Sofia from 1998, but now used for anti-terrorist training

Quite unusual to see a Russian-built An-2 in this group of about half a dozen - the others were of the more common WSK-PZL (Polish) variety

First seen with Balkan in 1971 and leased to Palair for around a year in late 1991. Later stored at Sofia all-white and returned to Russia in 1994 but fate unknown

Of the 541 of this 1937 shipboard reconnaissance design built, 12 were flown from Varna by the Bulgarian Navy during WWII. This one was almost destroyed in a post-war purge against items of Nazi origin but was hidden away, and is now one of only three complete examples in the world, the other two being in the US
