The buildings behind the Lichtenstein owned Skyknight were put up by the Luftwaffe after 1940 when they established Fliegerhorst Melsbroek. Amazingly those wooden structures, plus the intact-looking control tower, were still standing 30 years later. Judging by Google Earth, they have since been replaced by a cargo complex.

KLM were the first airline in Europe to get the DC-9. At first they were all the stubby -15 Srs like this until the longer -32s took over. This one left for ALM Antillean Airlines in 1970 and was wrecked in a hard landing while operating for a Colombian airline on 26 March 1992.

The small registration on the side looks lost and probably should have been applied to the tail. A later repaint rectified this however the aircraft was wrecked while being leased as a jump ship, near Bucharest on 23 June 2012.

I've read a claim by someone to have seen these being ferried via Shannon in the 1960s/70s, in which case they may have been modified to carry fuel in the hopper tank. This example arrived at EBBR with temporary registration N5149 and here awaits delivery to Morocco which never happened. It moved to Spain in 1971 as EC-BYO where it crashed in 1996.

When I visited Brussels in 1965 the Cessna distribution center had a collection of mangled airframes that had come to grief during sea transportation. The solution was to air ferry with long range fuel tanks and this method proved 100% reliable. An example is this Skylane which arrived at EBBR with ferry registration N71310 taped on and here awaits pick-up by its new Swedish owner. Still active in 2020.
