This is a replica of the very first rocket-engined aircraft in the world. The original Ente was built as a glider and made its first flight in Jun-1927. It was converted as the Raketen-Ente and as such flew on 11-Jun-1928, first with two 12 kg rockets and in the end with two 20 kg ones. The rockets were ignited after a bungee launch. It then flew 1400m in one minute. On a later flight the same day the aircraft caught fire but a safe landing could hastily be made. In Oct-1928 it was exposed at the ILA Berlin. The non-airworthy replica was built by the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum.

The Rhönsperber was designed for Schweyer by Hans Jacobs and the prototype made its first flight in Mar-1935. The aircraft on the photo was built somewhere between 1935 and 1938 and its cn and original registration are unknown. It later became D-6262 until cancelled in Jul-1970. Then it went to Sammlung Welzhofer in Günzburg until acquired by the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum at Wasserkuppe. To commemorate the first prototype D-Rhönsperber from 1935 the museum painted it in that aircraft's contemporary markings (except for the text on the fin).

Ferdinand Schulz built his FS-3 in 1922. He took part in the Rhön 1922 meeting but the technical commission did not allow him to fly in the contest for lack of structural rigidity. However, two years later, on May 18, 1924, he set a new world endurance record of 8 hours and 42 minutes with it. Unbelievable that somebody could sit on such a small seat for such a long time, unprotected against the cold wind, and without having eaten anything! The aircraft shown here is a replica built in 1975 by Klaus Heyn

The Vampyr is the father of all later sailplanes, at the time indicating the direction that sailplane aerodynamics and construction would go. On 05-Sep-1921 new world records were set at Wasserkuppe for duration with 15min 40 sec and distance with 7.5 km. In 1922 some improvements were made to it and on 18-Aug-1922 in the Rhön contest it became the first glider that stayed in the air for more than an hour. More world records were broken with it and the final one was on 19-Aug-1922 with an enduration record of 3h 06min and a height gain of 350m. This replica was built by OSC Wasserkuppe.

Built in 1942, it was first registered as WBLV-67 (with the Württemberg-Badischen Luftsportverband), later it became D-8146 and it flew until 1983. In 2004 it went to the Werderaner Zweirad- und Technikmuseum in Werder, in 2012 to the Gerhard Neumann Museum in Niederalteich and later to the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum at Wasserkuppe. More than 12000 SG-38s were built by several manufacturers and gliding clubs. Here it is shown with "Das Boot" an optional pod for better comfort.

Octave Chanute in the USA was quite successful with his 1896 glider. In 1904 a slightly different version was built for the Saint Louis Exposition where it was flown daily from Oct. 7 to 25. After that it was shipped to France where it is now in the Musée de l'Air in Paris. The one shown here is a replica built by Carsten Brinkmeier, finished in Jun-2006. A few flight attempts were made, but for safety reasons no full flight was made. In Oct-2006 it was handed over to the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum at Wasserkuppe.

This Gö-3 was built in 1939 by Hans Wullschleger. Its cn and early registration are unknown. It was registered HB-282 in Jul-1975. It went to the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum at Wasserkuppe in 1988. Its registration was cancelled in May-1991. On the cockpit frame it reads "Basel-Mulhouse Airport".

DM-2704 registered Nov-1963, to DDR-2704 later, cancelled Dec-1989 and to Deutsches Segelflugmuseum at Wasserkuppe where it was painted as DM-2704 again. The Favorit was the last glider built in the DDR, only 5 were built.

The ESG-29 is a single-seat primary training glider from 1929 that flew in many countries. Large numbers have been built, also by gliding clubs. It had the nickname "Schädelspalter" (skullsplitter) because of the strut in front of the pilot, but no such occurrences have been reported. The one seen here is an airworthy replica built by Klaus Heyn and handed over to the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum at Wasserkuppe in 1988.

BGA3277 registered Mar-1990, later to Deutsches Segelflugmuseum at Wasserkuppe. The construction plans for this glider were published by Hans Jacobs in a 1932 book and quite a few were built. This one was built by Mike L Beach in the UK in 1990 and flew well. Also Schleicher built a similar model but with a number of differences. Both were developed from the 1923 Lippisch Djävlar Annama. Djävlar Annama is a curse used often by Swedish workers in the Lippisch workshop when the hammer landed on their fingers. Hol's der Teufel is a rough translation of that.

Although sharing the Mü-13 model number with the Akaflieg München Merlin, the Mü-13E Bergfalke is a very different aircraft. As glider flying was at the time prohibited in Germany, the prototype of the Mü-13E was built by the Segelfliegergruppe Jenbach in Austria. The first flight was made as OE-0138 on 05-Aug-1951. Although the aircraft on the photo is painted as OE-0138, the museum says that it was built by FSC Giebelstadt in 1955/56 so this is probably not the real OE-0138.

HB-16 was built in 1933 in Switzerland by Messrs Widmer and Stirnemann. In 1970 it was discovered by Klaus Heyn in an Alpine mountain railway shed and brought to Germany where he restored it. It then went to the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum at Wasserkuppe. At the righthand side it carries its real registration HB-16. The Falke was designed by Alexander Lippisch and apart from RRG was also built by Schleicher, Schneider, ÖAeC and many gliding clubs. In England Slingsby built it as the T-1/T-2 Falcon. The DLV marking is on the rudder, hidden by the wing.
