After B737 cargo planes were allowed to serve Wamena airport as from 2010, the Indonesian DGCA also cleared passenger 737's to land there in early 2014. Around 2018 however, the risk of 737 pax flights was re-evaluated and deemed to be too high, and consequently stopped, even though no incident happened with a pax 737. Reason's given were the relatively short runway length combined with Wamena's altitude of 5500 ft. In turn, the ATR-72 became the standard pax airplane again serving WMX. Note the kids on the other side of the runway, well within the airport premises....

Delivered new to Bearskin Airlines as C-GGVX in September of 1975, later with Air-Dale, also in Canada. Was registered in Germany as D-ISKY with different owners between April 1995 and December 2002, before joining Trigana Air that month and year. Trigana Air operated - and still does - many Twin Otters into jungle airstrips in Papua, and due to the demanding flying conditions had a fair number of incidents unfortunately.

As from September 1982, the Fuerza Aérea Española operated it for six years as T.9-26, before it became N666NC with New Cal Aviation and later Pen Turbo Aviation. Wamena is the biggest city in the world completely depending on supplies flown in by air, as there's no road leading to the Baliem valley. Air cargo capacity is in high demand and it was only in 2010 that jets started to serve Wamena. PK-YRZ was the 1st 737 to land in Wamena. It was delared damaged beyond economical repair (BER) after a hard landing in Wamena on May 20, 2013, and broken up in due course.
