The last Reliant. This one-off V-77B, fitted with a 450-hp R-985 engine, has construction number 501, so it followed on the production batch of 500 military V-77s that mostly went to Britain. Apparently it was tested by the US Navy at NAS Patuxent River. 62 other V-77s, returned by Britain in 1945, were allocated BuNo serials, but none seem to have served in the USN. Owned by someone in Virginia, N39414 was cancelled in 1956. Photo from: Naval History and Heritage Command

The Vultee V-90 was designed as a heavy single-seat dive-bomber for the US Army. In 1943 the USAAF changed its role to low-level attack and then cancelled it. However, the first prototype was completed as a testbed for the 3000-hp P&W R-4360 Wasp Major engine, needed for the B-29. It first flew on 11 February 1944. Here it is seen during testing at NAS Patuxent River as the US Navy compared this aircraft to its Douglas AD Skyraider and Martin AM Mauler. Subsequently used by Pratt & Whitney as NX60373. Scrapped in 1950. Photo from: Naval History and Heritage Command

The Fairchild 45 was a five-seat executive aircraft first flown in 1935. It was comfortable and easy to fly, yet only 16 F-45A series aircraft were built. One of these, NC16365, was sold to the US Navy as a JK-1. It was used by Rear Admiral King at Anacostia and later on the American west coast at North Island and Alameda. During WWII two more F-45As were impressed as JK-1s and two by the US Army as UC-88s. Fairchild took over Kreidner-Reisner Aircraft at Hagerstown in 1929. Fairchild moved there itself in 1931 and supposedly the Kreider-Reisner name disappeared in 1934. Photo from: Smithsonian Institution
