8386M. Understood to be a composite rebuild from 3 Tempests, and now on display in the RAF Museum Hendon.

Soon this extremely rare Tempest II will be airworthy. Its been a very long process but will be well worth it seeing the only flying example of this type in the world. The engine is an R2800 which I was told came out of a Canadair CL-215.

An extremely rare aircraft which is part of the brand new KF Aerospace Museum in Kelowna. This aircraft was undergoing a restoration in New Zealand before it was obtained by the museum and brought to Kelowna where it has been undergoing a complete rebuild to airworthy status. Its nearing completion and is a great addition to the collection

Built in 1944 as a Tempest Mk.V, this aircraft was test flown by test pilot Neville Duke after conversion for target tug duties in 1950. It served at 233 OCU, Pembrey, till 1955 when Meteors took over in the target towing role. NV778 was ferried for storage at Aston Down in July that year, when the RAF retired its last Tempests. In 1958 it was reconstructed to display standard from the remains of several aircraft lying at Shoeburyness ranges, 15% of the parts coming from other aircraft. Secured by the RAFM in 1998, it was placed on show at Hendon in 2003 and until recently hung from the roof.

Built as a Tempest V by Hawkers at Langley in early 1945. Converted to TT5 postwar. Here repainted in ground attack colours with underwing "D-Day stripes" for the RAF's 50th anniversary display. Now displayed at Hendon.

Problems with the Centaurus engine resulted in long production delays and, with the end of the war in sight, orders were trimmed. Many surplus aircraft were handed over to the Royal Indian Air Force and PR536 became HA457 in Sept. 1947. Six ex-Indian Tempest IIs were shipped back to the UK in 1979 and this example in the RAF Museum is actually a composite of three aircraft. The forward fuselage of PR536 is supplemented by the wings and the rear fuselage of unidentified Tempest IIs.

Exhibited wearing the code letters of 54 Squadron RAF which operated the Tempest II post-war.

Powered by a powerful Bristol Centaurus radial, the Tempest II came too late to see action in WWII. Further development led to the Sea Fury. PR536 served with the RAF in India and was transferred to the Royal Indian Air Force as HA457. This is a composite airframe with the forward fuselage of PR536.

The Tempest V, powered by a 2200-hp Napier Sabre inline engine, was the mark that fought in the final year of the war in Europe. This one however is painted as a postwar target tug.
