Two Towers - Melbourne's original Control Tower, built in the 1960s, is dwarfed by the new Tower being built alongside it. The new Tower will eventually be 78m high and provide a sufficient view to accommodate the airport's future expansion - particularly a new north-south runway to the west of the Tower. Amazingly, this new structure went up in about a fortnight using continuous casting of the concrete in a slip form.

'Firebird 305' back for yet another year of bushfire work based at Bendigo. It had been pretty quiet when I took this photo, but on Saturday 7 February the worst bushfires in Victoria's history broke out in, south and south-east of Bendigo. More than 180 people perished in 24 hours of fire-storms. Undoubtedly Firebird 305 was in the thick of the action. This 1973 JetRanger was originally N59507 then A6-ALF before being registered VH-JVH(2) on 10 December 1999.

This brand-new King Air is one of several operated by Pel-Air out of Essendon on the Air Ambulance contract. Built in 2010, it was allocated the US registration N6155S, but appears to have never taken it up. Similarly, it also appears to have had the Australian registration VH-ZKB reserved. In any case, it was registered in Australia as VH-VAE on 4 June 2010.

Rarotonga Tower and ops building, with ANZ B762 ZK-NBF parked behind. Being an air traffic controller myself, I was able to spend some pleasant hours in this picturesquely-sited Tower thanks to local Controller Mark Vaikai (and much to my wife's disgust!).
