Bell Aircraft X-1A Seen at the National Aviation Show in Dayton, Ohio in September, 1954. It was in this aircraft on December 12, 1953 that Major Chuck Yeager set a new speed record of Mach 2.44, 1,650 mph, at 75.000 feet. The aircraft subsequently tumbled out of control due to inertia coupling, and fell 51,000 feet before Major Yeager was able to regain control and land safely. T X-1A was lost on August 8, 1955, when an in-flight explosion occurred just prior to being launched from a B-29, and the aircraft was jettisoned in the Muroc desert.

Later converted to C-123K and loaned to the South Vietnam AF, then returned to USAF. I don't have a shot of the NACA B-29 45-21800 in the background, but sure wish I did. It was used as the mothership for the Bell X-1A/B trials.

This is the RB-36H that is now at Castle Air Museum as it appeared at Chanute AFB in 1979, for some reason painted as B-36B 44-92065. It's possible that I flew on this aircraft when it was with the 718th Bomb Squadron at Ellsworth AFB, Rapid City, South Dakota. The circle W markings would be the 326th Bomb Squadron(H) 42nd Bomb Wing at Loring AFB, Maine.,
