In the 1930s, eight Sparrowhawks were adapted with a hook mechanism on the upper wing to test one of the more imaginative ideas in aviation history. The F9C-2s were deployed with the USS Akron and USS Macon, thereby turning these airships into flying aircraft carriers. This rebuilt example is on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center.
