An F2H Banshee of VF-11, flown by Ensign Buffkin, photographed over an enemy airfield. The T tail code evidently belonged to CVG-101 on the carrier Kearsarge (and not to CVG-1). A naval port, Wonsan was continuously bombed and shelled for much of the Korean War, and the airfield was unusable. From 2013, Wonsan was developed as a resort, Kim Jong-un having spent his childhood years here, and a civil terminal at the airbase received its first flight on 24 September 2015 - see the photos of our contributor Robbie Shaw who was on board. Preserved on board of USS Lexington is this rare F2H-2 Banshee, wiht wings in upright position.

Naval Aviation Museum aircraft. A total of 895 Banshees were built between 1947 and 1953. The F2H-2 was the most widely-used variant and saw service in the Korean War.

This F2H-2 was acquired by the museum in early 1977. It is still in the markings of its last assigned unit; Naval Air Reserve Training Unit Oakland (California). The a/c now is on display at the USS Lexington Museum in Corpus Christi, Texas.

McDonnell Aircraft was established in St Louis in 1939, growing from 15 employees to 5000 by the end of WWII and taking over Curtiss-Wright facilities.
