One of four KLM Fokker F.XIIs sold to Crilly Airways, probably seen before delivery. Leo Crilly had big ambitions for his small company from Leicester, moving to Croydon as you can see. A service to Lisbon reportedly started on 1 February 1936, but soon newly formed British Airways was using the F.XIIs on its Paris route from the new Gatwick airport. By July they had been sold to the Spanish Nationalists. Two crashed on the way to Spain but this airframe did serve in the Civil War. Also note the Lufthansa Junkers F24, D-UMUR. KLM sold four F.XIIs to Crilly Airways for its new London - Lisbon route, but they were soon being used by the British Airways company on its Paris service and then sold to the Spanish Nationalists in a shady deal. KLM opened its scheduled intercontinental service to the Dutch East Indies in 1930 on a fortnightly basis with the Fokker F.VIIb/3m. From 1 October 1931 it was flown weekly in both directions by the new Fokker F.XII, which could carried four to six passengers on the 15,000-km route in addition to the mail. PH-AIV Valk (falcon) has been put up horizontally for an inspection by Queen Wilhelmina.
