The AURI, as the Indonesian AF was known before 1974, appears to have received its first couple of Albatross amphibians as long ago as 1954, followed by about 10 new UF-1s (pre-1962 designation for what became the HU-16) in 1957/58. A few ex-German Navy HU-16s were added in 1977. All but the first aircraft were originally serialled in the PB-5.. series like the PBY-5s that preceded them. This one displayed at the Museum since about 1993 was previously PB-517. IR-0220 is also preserved, at Bandung. The operating unit responsible for SAR duties was SkU.5 at Abdul Rachman Saleh AB, Malang

Previously displayed nearby on the other side of this hardstanding, under the seaplane crane on the shore of Lake Bracciano. The AMI received a dozen HU-16s to fulfil its SAR obligations under ICAO from the late 1950s, replacing the indigenous Cant Z.506 seaplanes and serving in ever reducing numbers until 1978 when replaced by HH-3F helicopters. The HU-16 latterly became quite problematic and spent extended periods under overhaul, while some were restricted to calm water or land-only operations.

Withdrawn from use in July 1979, after a last flight from Ciampino to Biella, it remained for years in storage at this AeroClub, but abandoned. After its service with the Italian Air Force as MM50-180, this Albatross was preserved at the airport of Cuneo, Levaldigi, Italy for more than 20 years. In January 2014 it was acquired by the Musée de l'Hydraviation at Latécoère near Biscarrosse, France and it was delivered to the museum by road in June 2014. The Grumman was fully restored in these USAF colours with its original serial, and on 14 May 2018 it was placed on display as seen here. The number 0180 on the tail is from its original serial 50-180 with which the aircraft was originally delivered to the USAF on on 23 Jul 1951.
