Korean War photo. VX730 was damaged in a forced landing on to Currarong Beach NSW on March 9, 1959. The Australian War Memorial has a Sea Fury displayed as VX730. It has extensively researched this aircraft and says it is basically VW232. It believes the real VX730 was accidentally scrapped and VW232 substituted with its identity before delivery to the Sydney Technical College. Because VX730 had been a combat veteran and VW232 had always been an instructional airframe with the RAN, the Sea Fury is displayed as VX730. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

Delivered to RAN 29/05/73 arriving Nowra NSW 07/06/73. Later coded '800'. Fitted with specialised electronic equipment between 1978 and 1980 and subsequently used for electronic countermeasures training. Initially operated by 851 Squadron and transferred to 723 Squadron 31/08/84. Decommissioned 23/06/00 and ferried East Sale for storage/sale 26/06/00. The logistics of moving such a large aircraft proved too much and N15-709 was broken up in 10/2019. On 23/10/2019 the forward fuselage plus a 2-metre section of the centre fuselage containing the EWTS arrived at FAAM Nowra

Purchased by the RAN in February 1956, WZ931 left the UK a month later onboard HMAS Melbourne. On arrival at Sydney it went to 724 Sqdn, Nowra. During a display the airframe was subjected to 8G, causing a cracked spar and buckling of the starboard stub-plane. After repairs it was operated by 805 Sqdn before going on display at the FAA Museum, Nowra. It arrived at SAAM from there in October 1987. It had been intended that the Sea Venoms for the RAN would be built by DHA Bankstown like the Vampire, but this changed to direct purchase of 39 which served till 1970 when A-4s took over.

In addition to widespread use by the RAAF, the RAN's 724 Sqdn operated 10 MB.326s in the 1970s, although remaining examples were transferred to the RAAF in 1983. This one became A9-077 but was restored to its Navy colours for display in 2009. Beautifully presented in what must be one of the best museums for photography I've visited worldwide - good light, well spaced and little clutter.

The real XG766 was indeed coded 808/NW in service with the RAN at Nowra between 1963 and 1970, but that aircraft eventually found its was to private buyer in South Africa via the UK. This is actually XG770, delivered to the RAN in 1959 and sold after service as 802/NW, 809/NW, 871/NW and 981/NW to a private individual who gifted it to the Australian War Memorial. However it never left Nowra and was later given to the Museum.

This is an ex-Royal Navy Firefly of 1950 vintage which was transferred to the RAN in 1953 by sea after refurbishing by Fairey. In 1961 it underwent conversion to TT.6 for target towing duties and was eventually allocated to the FAA Museum, where it was restored to flight in 1986 as VH-NVU and finished in a camouflage scheme. However engine problems meant that the RAN Historic Flight soon had to ground it.
