Paying a nod to the ground-attack jet project jointly developed by Romania and Yugoslavia in the 1970s, this type was produced in the latter country by Soko as the J-22 Orao but despite the location, this is a IAR-93 Vultur built by their Craiova partners. A small number of J-22s are still in service with the Serbian AF

I first photographed this Sabre almost exactly 40 years earlier, when it was parked on the grass in camouflage and coded '146' outside Ljubljana-Brnik airport where it had been based. Alongside was the F-84G with which it now shares space in the Pivka museum. The peculiar IF-86D designation was apparently the result of a conversion for reconnaissance in the early 1960s. The restoration in silver colours was completed around 2016

This Thunderjet was allocated US serial 52-2910 on emerging from Republic's Farmingdale facility on Long Island but was suppled under MDAP to the Italian AF. Passing to the Yugoslav AF in 1957, it operated till the beginning of the 1970s and was later placed on outdoor display at Ljubljana airport coded '914', next to the F-86 which is now alongside, another F-86 and a SOKO 522 (near the well-known Adria DC-6). It underwent a five-year restoration from 2008 for the Pivka museum.

When Slovenia gained independence in 1991, this Yugoslav-built Gazelle became its first military aircraft when its pilot defected from Yugoslavia, where it had served from around 1979 as 12660. Initially serialled TO-001 with the Slovenian Territorial Defence, it was later registered SL-HAA then S5-HAA. It crashed in 1994 but was restored for static display at Ljubljana airport, then being moved to the Pika collection in 2012

This Sabre was originally constructed as a F-86D and was one of 129 ex-USAF 'Sabre Dogs' that were bought by Yugoslavia in 1961. Around 1963 it was converted to an IF-86D and latterly it was stationed and then preserved at Ljubljana - Brnik in camouflage markings. It has been on since ~2015 display at the super Park Vojaške Zgodovine in this bare-metal scheme.

The Utva Aero 3 was a piston-engined military trainer aircraft built in Yugoslavia, of which one hundred and ten were eventually produced. They served in the Yugoslav AF from 1958 to mid-1970s. Not many are properly preserved and so it is nice to see this example on display at this super museum.

This Thunderjet was built at Farmingdale and TOC with the USAF as 52-2910 but immediately exported to Italy to serve with the Aeronautica Militare Italiana as MM52-2910. It joined the Yugoslav AF as 10642 from May 1957 until around 1971, when the plane was retired and became a gate guard at Brnik AB. From 2008 to 2013 the plane underwent this wonderful restoration and is now on display at this very interesting museum.

During 1970, Romania and Yugoslavia began discussions on the subject of jointly developing a new ground-attack orientated fighter aircraft. These plans came to fruition and into service as the Craiova IAR-93 Vultur in Romania and the Soko J-22 Orao in Yugoslavia. Therefore although this particulat example is the Romanian version (it was accepted into the Fortele Aeriene Romane in December 1986) it is a fitting exhhibit at this super museum.

This Partizan has an important status within this museum as it was the first military aircraft of an independent Slovenia. This came about due to the pilot defecting in this helicopter, during the 1991 Ten Day War, from the Yugoslav AF to Slovenia. It then became SL-HAA but was retired after a mishap in 1994. In 2012 the original TO markings were restored for display at this very interesting museum.
