The second Piaggio P.136. According to a drawing this aircraft was creamy white and grey. It was later rebuilt as the P.136L prototype with Lycoming engines. Another P.136, or perhaps just a mock-up, was inside in the Grand Palais during the 1949 Paris Salon - see photo 446345. Photo from: Bibliothèque nationale de France - Gallica

The second prototype of the Espadon (swordfish) jet fighter, seen on display here well before its first flight on 16 September 1949. The small aft ventral air intake turned out to be ineffective. Other intake arrangements were tested, but the Espadon failed to qualify for operational service. Fitted with an auxiliary rocket motor, the third prototype F-WFRG exceeded Mach 1 in level flight in 1953. Photo by: Dmitri Kessel / Life

The Norazur salespeople at the 1949 Salon presumably had a quiet time. Sources are not sure if a second prototype, the N.2101 with Béarn 6 engines, was built, but apparently it was - this does not seem to be a mock-up. See photo 446955 of the Dassault Ouragan for a frontal view. The N.2100, F-WFAB, took part in the flying show at Orly, wearing show number 18. Photo by: Dmitri Kessel / Life

To research the SO.4000 jet bomber, Sud-Ouest built the M1 glider and the M2, powered by a Derwent engine. It first flew on 13 April 1949, just before the 1949 Salon. This is probably the real thing, but it is doubtful if it was flown with the flush cockpit canopy seen here. Its outrigger wheels are not fitted. Also see photo 449819. The second of three MS.700 Pétrel aircraft at the 1949 Paris Salon. Apparently it is already to MS.701 standard here with Mathis G8-20, rather than Potez engines. The sign describes it as a 'colonial' light twin - not very woke! Photo 449819 shows the tail of this plane and ambulance markings. It made a tour of Africa in 1950. The small sign promises that the MS.700 prototype was to appear in the flying show at Orly on 14 May. The third airframe, flown in 1951, was the MS.703 with six, rather than four seats. Most of the French aircraft at the 1949 Paris Air Show were unsuccessful, and it will not come as a surprise that this was true for the Nord 2100 Norazur transport with pusher engines. Marcel Dassault's Ouragan worked, however, and spawned a long lineage of jet fighters. Prototype 02 first flew in May 1949 - after the show. Photo by: Dmitri Kessel / Life

Named after the seaside resort in Normandy, the Deauville first flew in 1947 as the SO.7050 with nosewheel landing gear. The second machine was the SO.7055 with tailwheel. By 1949, both had been converted to SO.7060 taildraggers. Prototype 01, F-WDVZ, took part in the flying show of the 1949 Salon at Orly. This static exhibit is the second airframe, F-WEAA, which became F-BEAA later in 1949. The c/n on the tailfin is confirmed as 02 on another picture. Photo by: Dmitri Kessel / Life

First flown in 1943 as the SO.90 Cassiopée, the Corse was a small airliner which saw limited service with the French air force and navy. The only civilian operator was apparently Air Services of India. On the right is the Sud-Ouest M.2 jet, F-WFDK. Top right, Morane-Saulnier MS.701 light twin F-WFDE, MS.474 Vanneau No 82 and an MS.733 Alcyon, F-BLYE. The glider towards the left is a Breguet Br 900 Louisette, F-WEPE.
