Taken on charge new by the USAAF in 1943 as 43-48744. Transferred to the RCAF as 977, later re-numbered as 12958. Became CF-QHY in 1972. Joined FNT in 2007. According to the official accident report both pilots lost sight of each other during the turn to final while doing solo circuit training. The two aircraft became locked together and it was a small miracle that they managed to land this well while still entangled. Both pilots remained uninjured. The Canadian Saunders Aircraft Company had moved from Quebec to Gimli, Manitoba in 1971 to manufacture ST-27 regional airliners, which were twin turboprop conversions of second hand De Havilland Herons. The ST-28 was a new-build, developed and improved version of the ST-27. However, progress with testing towards certification and series production, with no firm orders, proved too much of a financial strain. The withdrawal of Provincial Government support funding in 1976 finally caused the company to shut down.
