Posing with the second S-40, in for maintenance in Dinner Key's Hangar 2. The bottom of the hull has been stripped and resealed. Despite the S-40's awkward and draggy appeance, it operated successfully and safely as one of the largest airliners of its day, carrying 38 passengers plus six crew, or 24 pax on longer flights. What became of this 1940 DC-3 is unclear. It may have been leased to the US Navy as BuNo 99099, which is listed as lost over spurious 'Yamagaga in North Pacific' on 16 February 1944. NC25643 cancelled in July 1944. Alternatively it went to Mexico as XA-CAM. Photo from Clyde Smith, Pan Am station manager in Fairbanks, and probably taken at old Weeks Field which could be used by DC-3s 'with caution'. At times of bad conditions, airlines were allowed to use Ladd Army Airfield from 1940. Photo from: SFO Museum

The Consolidated "Commodore" made its first flight in 1929 and was the state-of-the-art flying boat in the early 1930s. It was increasingly obsolete by 1937. The model 16-1 had a capacity of 22 passengers and 3 crew members.

A new Boeing 314, NC18603, at Pan American's Treasure Island base, wearing fleet number 17. Given the amount of people, the photo seems to have been taken during the Golden Gate International Expo which opened here on 18 February 1939. The aircraft flew to Baltimore five days later to join Pan Am's Alantic Division, and was christened Yankee Clipper by Eleanor Roosevelt in Washington, DC on 3 March. 'Pan American's new high-altitude fleet. Ready for 'top flight' to Rio and San Cristobal [Cristóbal, Panama]: the Comet [NC19910], the Rainbow [NC19902] and the Flying Cloud [centre] at Miami.' This was Pan Am's entire 'Strato-Clipper' fleet. Location assumed to be Municipal Airport (later Amelia Earhart Field) which the 307s had to use until the runways at Pan Am's 36th Street Airport (now MIA) were lengthened.
