This plane was built as a C-53 here in Santa Monica in 1941 and TOC with the USAAF as 41-20107. In January 1956 it was issued with the civilian registration N242SM but then TOC with the US Navy as a R4D-3 with BuNo 05075. At some it was retired and went on to carry the registrations NC1075M, N60R and N956AR. In January 2005 the plane was donated to the City of Santa Monica and placed on display with the Museum of Flying.

First DC-8 visit to Schiphol. Registration on the tailfin seems to be N8068D. Several sources confirm this reg for c/n 45255, first flown on 25 March 1959 and delivered to Pan Am as N802PA in 1961. N8068D is lacking in the FAA database. Photo by: Harry Pot / Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

N number 30000 has been worn by five different DC-3s. NC30000 was issued regularly in 1941 to a DC-3A (c/n 4809) which the Douglas company decided to keep as a demonstrator and executive transport. Douglas kept the mark and used it for the first remanufactured DC-3C (old c/n 13825, new c/n 43073) and then for the first Super DC-3 (c/n 6017/43158). When that one was sold, the reg of the plane in the photo, the second Super DC-3 (c/n 4122/43159) was changed from N15579 to N30000. Another Super DC-3, VC-117D BuNo 17175 (c/n 12779/43301) also wore N30000 in the 1990s. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum
