slide scan from the NK collection. - BEA operated a few Viscounts with additional "Scottish Airways" titles between 1971 and 1973; thereafter the turboprops were integrated into British Airways. G-AOHL was retired in 1980 and used by British Air Ferries as a cabin trainer at Southend.

Raring to go, "Sister Jean Kennedy" with ground staff in attendance !! In 1955, to replace Dragon Rapides, British European Airways bought two fixed undercarriage Heron 1Bs, G-ANXA and G-ANXB (now in Newark Air Museum), for its Scottish Highlands and Islands network. Serving until 1973, at any time one aircraft would be on scheduled services such as Glasgow to Tiree and to Barra with its unique and demanding tidal beach runway, while the other was on standby as the contracted aircraft for the government-funded Scottish Air Ambulance Service.

In transitional marks. The "BEA Scottish" titles have been removed, but "British Airways" has not yet been applied.

BEA used a pair of Skyliners to fly scheduled routes to some of the small islands off the west coast of Scotland. Here, G-AZYW is in transitional marks, prior to the BEA/BOAC merger which created British Airways.

This aircraft is an outdoor exhibit at the Newark Air Museum. It looks in a very sad condition. The last time I saw it it was in service!

Heron 'Sir James Young Simpson' is just one of many interesting exhibits at the wonderful Newark Air Museum.

'JC was withdrawn in 1974 and displayed in false Cambrian c/s at Cardiff-Rhoose until the museum there was closed. Broken up but fuselage saved and at Enstone in BEA colours for a time. Alongside is G-APEX and behind DC-3 N655GP, now in the Science Museum at Wroughton as EI-AYO
