NC14267 was owned by Antarctic explorer Lincoln Ellsworth. When an accident forned the expedition to dock in Hobat, Tasmania, the Australian Government bought the aircraft for use in future Australian expeditions, That did not occur and instead it was used for airways calibration as VH-ADR . Impressed by the RAAF as A61-1 during World War II. Scrapped after an accident in 1943. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

First Canadian built Delta. Remained in service until 1944. This photo was taken three days after its first flight which was from the Fairchild-owned seaplane base at Boucherville on the St Lawrence River that Canadian Vickers also used. Both had their factories at nearby Longueuil airfield. Flight testing continued from this facility until taken on charge by the RCAF in September. Photo from: Library and Archives Canada

The Northrop Delta was a derivative of the Gamma mailplane, its wider fuselage seating eight passengers. It was not a success as new regulations killed single-engined airliners in the USA in 1934. This example was registered in Sweden on 19 April 1934 and the next morning, it took off for a special Stockholm - Malmö - Amsterdam - Paris flight. Note the Northrop logo on the fin. Seen in front of Schiphol's Hangar B with KLM's first DC-3, PH-ALI Ibis, the ABA Northrop Delta is wearing no titles or name at this point and it may well be that the aircraft is on its way to Spain here where it served the Republican government during the Civil War. It was finally used by Franco's air force during WWII. Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives
