Ex 55 and 255, this Flying Life Boat was reserialled as V115 in October 1934, shortly before CGAS Salem opened. From 1933 to 1936, the Coast Guard's aircraft also wore names of stars, and the absence of its name Arcturus would date this beautiful shot from 1936. The type was retired in August 1941. Five PJ-1s were built for the USCG, the first of which became the PJ-2 when it converted to tractor engines instead of pusher. General Aviation was the successor to Fokker Aircraft Corporation of America aka Atlantic Fokker. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

We gather this rescue flying boat type - with beaching gear - was conceived as the Atlantic Fokker (A)F-15 to become the General Aviation GA-15. The USCG called it the Flying Life Boat (FLB). Later this designation was changed to PJ in the US Navy system. This was the first of five airframes built, first flown in 1931 and delivered in January 1932. In 1933 this one was rebuilt to PJ-2 standard with tractor propellers. USCG serial number changed from 51 to 251 and then to V116. Named Antares. V116 reportedly withdrawn in 1940. The Atlantic Fokker company became the General Aviation division of GM - later North American. Its (A)F-15 became the GA-15, designated FLB (Flying Life Boat) by the USCG and then PJ in the US Navy designation system. Five machines built from 1931, the first of which was converted to tractor propulsion as the PJ-2. USCG s/n 254 Amacar, s/n 255 Arcturus and the Douglas RD-1 Dolphin s/n 128 Sirius were based at Dinner Key in 1934. Photo from: US Coast Guard
