The prototype Balliol was powered by a Bristol Mercury engine because of delays with the turboprops intended to power it. The next two prototypes had Armstrong Siddeley Mamba turboprops and VL892 was later fitted with one. The production aircraft, the Balliol T.2, was powered by the proven RR Merlin.
