Deployed as part of a bombing group at the Fire Attack Base at Slave Lake Airport.

Far from its New Brunswick home, on contract to reinforce the British Columbia Wildfire Service fleet, carrying the bombing number "24". Just returned from tackling a fire in the immediate local forested area, its rear fuselage spattered red from the release of retardant.

A long way from its New Brunswick home, Bomber "24" reinforces the aerial resources parked at readiness outside the British Columbia Wildfire Service's headquarters at Kamloops Airport.

GM employed several 580s and a variety of other types to transport personnel between their scattered facilities. This one has the GM logo on the tail and is seen at Willow Run Airport west of Detroit, Michigan where GM makes automatic transmissions.

Helping with British Columbia fires and comes all the way from New Brunswick

A General Motors-built Avenger, delivered to the US Navy as 69323. After leaving the Navy in 1958 became an aerial tanker and sprayer; first as N7961C and after 1974 in Canada as C-GLEJ. Pictured with Forest Protection Ltd who operated it from 1974 to 2004. It was exported to the USA in 2004 as N124TB and is undergoing restoration as a warbird at the time of uploading.

A long way from home base on the East Coast

Turbo Firecat just starting its demonstration drop. Ex US Navy 136552, withdrawn from use in 1980 and stored. To N4477Z in 1984 and to C-GQCW with Conair the same year. Converted by them to Firecat airtanker and delivered to the Sécurité Civile in June 1985 as F-ZBEX/9 (using F-WDSX as ferry reg). To F-WEOL in Sep 1995 and flown to Conair in Canada. Stored at Abbotsford awaiting conversion to Turbo Firecat. Became C-GFZG in May 2000 for testing and re-delivered as Turbo Firecat F-ZBMA/24 in Jun 2002 (again using F-WEOL as ferry reg).

Camooweal, population 200, has an airport in 2019 but back when VH-UJM visited it likely landed at the racecourse and taxied up the main street to the pub. The aircraft passed through several hands after Qantas before ending up in Papua New Guinea where it was destroyed by enemy action during World War II. Photo from: State Library of Queensland
