The last active USAF B-24, it was modified as EZB-24M-21-FO ice research aircraft and used by the Aeronautical Icing Research Laboratory, but crashed on takeoff at Berlin, NH., on 6th March 1951. It was rebuilt for display at Lackland in 1956 and remained on display there until donated to the IWM at Duxford, UK, in 1999 for the then new America Air Museum. It is now displayed there painted to represent 44-40593 "Dugan", a Liberator based at Wendling, Norfolk, with the 392nd Bomb Group in WWII.

A-26C 44-35918 painted as B-26B 44-34287 Versatile Lady, a night intruder aircraft in the Korean War. At starboard is a huge squadron badge instead of the nose art, painted here in a General Audiences version. This airframe actually ended active USAF service in 1957, had several civil US, Costa Rican and Honduran registrations and was even with the Honduran air force. Arrived here as N2781G in jungle camo, later completely resprayed.

On display in at least the third version of its Air Education and Training Command livery here: initially partly bare metal with AETC shield on the tail, then resprayed grey with yellow tailband and the shield, and here with a grey tailband and the simplified emblem. The G designator in the type indicates this has been a ground instructional aircraft with the Air Force.

Probably given a USAAF livery because this is the USAF Airman Heritage Museum but unclear what the tail number stands for. True identity in small print under the horizontal stabiliser though: SNJ-4 51584. This US Navy trainer went civil in 1956 and crashed in November 1971 but could be saved well enough for display. On loan from the USAF Museum since 1993.

This A-7's first assignment was with the 23rd TFW at England AFB (LA), that had a successful Vietnam tour in 1973. It wears full markings, including the 76th TFS red tailband with white stars. Several years earlier here, it had toned-down markings and the tailband of the 75th TFS, same wing. Its operational time ended with the Colorado ANG in 1990 and it was preserved at Denver-Front Range airport (now Colorado Air and Space Port) intially, before being moved here at some point.

Former 23rd Tactical Air Support Squadron OA-10 Forward Air Control Warthog in its genuine Desert Storm markings. Tail code NF stands for 'Nail FAC' with callsign Nail originating from the Vietnam war. A toned-down squadron badge is above the wing root and the nose art says The Unknown Bomber and Desert Storm '91. It figures a sort of dachshund with antlers, about to shoot a bomb from a rubber catapult between its tail and antlers. Back in the US this A-10 later flew with another Davis Monthan squadron, the 354th FS.

Having been an Eagle Admirer since living within cycling distance of an active F-15 base as a teenager, I was pleased to finally see the very first one, and in its original F-15 Joint Test Force livery too. Also dubbed YF-15A, its test flying days ran from July 1972 to November 1975. It was later used as an exhibit by the Air Force Orientation Group and also on display here as the Desert Storm MiG killer 85-0114/EG, but rightfully restored.

A-26C 44-35918 painted as B-26B 44-34287 Versatile Lady, a night intruder aircraft in the Korean War. Nose art for the name on the other side, huge 13th Bombardment Squadron badge here. The Invader on display actually ended active USAF service in 1957, had several civil US, Costa Rican and Honduran registrations and was even with the Honduran air force. Arrived here as N2781G in jungle camo, later completely resprayed.

Posing as 'Joltin Josie, The Pacific Pioneer' of the 873rd Bomb Sqn, 498th Bomb Group (T) with accompanying port side nose art and mission marks - that I unfortunately do not have a decent photo of. Tragically, 42-24614 caught fire and crashed on take-off in the Northern Marianas on 1 April 1945, killing everyone on board. This airframe's true ID is in tiny print under the stabilo: RB/WB-29A 44-62220. Delivered to the USAAF in September 1945 and after active weather recce duty to the US Army as a static training target, 1960-1985, then to the USAF Museum in 1998.

Representing a B-17 that saw intensive action in the last years of WW2, both in bombing and later POW liberation missions. It operated with the 561st Bomb Squadron (T), 388th Bomb Group (H) from RAF Knettishall in England. The actual aircraft here, B-17G 44-83512, was always based in North America, in the US and Newfoundland, and ended up as a ground instructional airframe at Lackland AFB. True identity in small print on the bottom of the tail, as is often the case with historic displays.

This is really the former 44-29835, built as a B-25J and later converted into a TB-25N. Finished its flying career as N3676G and was eventually sprayed here as a B-25H of the 490th Bomb Squadron 'Burma Bridge Busters' operating from India, of which the (unofficial but consistently used) WW2 badge is on the nose.

The first of only three JF-105Bs ever built, prototypes for the projected RF-105B reconnaisance version that was cancelled in favour of the already existing RF-101. The trio was still completed with modified noses but without cameras. Retired in 1966, this is the only surviving one as JF-2 crashed and JF-3 was scrapped. Preserved at Lackland already in the 1970s in fake colours, later restored to this accurate test livery.

Thunderstreak representing 78th Fighter Bomber Squadron 'Bushmasters' commander Lt.Col. Charles E. Simpson's aircraft, F-84F 52-6718 as it was stationed at RAF Woodbridge in England during 1958-1959. That jet is said to have crashed near RAF Sculthorpe at an unknown date. This Streak's real identity is 52-8889. It went to France for its operational time and later became an instructional airframe at Lackland AFB.

The first F-86 Sabre, after the type was redesignated from P-86 in 1948. This one became an EF-86A in March 1949, like others from its batch over several years. Initially on display here with matching FU buzz number, later changed into the PU version that actually belongs to the P-86 period. This jet was a development aircraft for most of its career.
