G&A Aircraft, formerly Pitcairn, became a subsidiary of Firestone Tire & Rubber Company in 1943. Their Model GA-45 first flew as the single-seat XR-9 in Mar-1946, but was converted within a month to the tandem two-seater XR-9B. G & A was renamed to Firestone Aircraft Company in mid 1946, but all development ceased in 1947. Two airframes were built, the second one being the civil Model GA-45D prototype, NX58457, having side-by-side seats. That helicopter is preserved at Fort Rucker, painted as the tandem-seat military prototype. Photo from: Wright State University

This slide was taken when Chanute AFB was still active and was one of several a/c on display around the base. When the base closed it doesn't appear that this a/c became part of the Chanute Air Museum collection. It is currently on display at Kirkland AFB in New Mexico.

Landing at a US camp in Greenland, perhaps DYE-2 radar station, in support of the EGIG expedition. By January 1960 this airframe deployed to Antarctica, becoming the first C-130 to land at the South Pole. Back in Greenland it crashed at DYE-3 in 1972. How about having the Soviet Union, the United States and Germany in your order book! Fokker achieved this with the D.XI fighter, although Germany's order was cancelled and taken up by Romania. The USAAS received three D.XIs with the PW-7 designation and Curtiss D-12 engines. 68580 had standard plywood wing skinning and V-type struts, but 68581 and 68582 had fabric wing skinning and N-type struts. Note bombs and McCook Field code P-327 on rudder. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

The US Army's GAX programme was an early attempt at an armoured ground attack aircraft, to be fitted with a 37-mm cannon firing through the propeller hub. Built by the Aeromarine Plane and Motor Company of Keyport, New Jersey, the PG-1 was, not surprisingly, a poor performer and unpopular with Army test pilots. The first of three machines delivered to the USAAS, 64245 is seen wearing McCook Field project number P-240.
