Painted up as a warbird but not entirely clear to what airplane the markings are a tribute. Two USAF serials are candidates: A-7D 72-0180 and F-4F 72-1180. However, tail code TY is for Tyndall AFB (FL) where no A-7s were based, and the Phantom was a Luftwaffe machine, only operating in the US from Holloman AFB (NM) with code HO. Still nice though!

Revisiting Mid-Way after we were there the previous day was rewarded with a lovely golden hour. Looking good in her 'warbirdish' grey company livery, N92578 started life in 1943 as USAAF C-47 42-32802 and was converted into a DC-3 later. She wore a whole bunch of US registrations plus a Bolivian one. Having the nose turret mount removed here but she has one on the belly as well plus three sensor/camera ports.

Fourteen years after I first saw her, dormant at the Sycamore Strip in the DFW suburbs (a spectacular location for a DC-3 in itself), we met again and she was doing well. Visible is the nose turret mount, as well as oil drip pans for the P&W R-1830s. Delivered as C-47A 42-92555 to the USAAF in January 1944 and passed on to the RAF as KG360 about a week later, early February. Certified airworthy as a DC-3 since 1974.

Replica of one of Charles E. McGee's P-51s, a D model that therefore should depict his aircraft in the Korean War. Code 78 however is normally tied to then Capt. McGee's P-51C, that he named after his wife Frances' nickname. Even more confusion exists about the serials, including a mixup with Kitten's predecessor, a P-51B named Donna. The bird is hanging in the entrance hall of the Henry B. Tippie National Aviation Education Center of the Commemorative Air Force.

Diamond Lil on chocks for overhaul in the Commemorative Air Force hangar. The nose art with her name is on the other side and the badge on the rear fuselage reads 'The Air Transport Command - U.S. Army Air Forces'. The data block on port side gives 'U.S. Army B-24A, Air Corps Serial No. 40-2366'. She was assigned this ID initially but not taken up by the army and went to the RAF instead.

Officially registered as a Hörzing CH 601 XL according to the principle of naming the builder/assembler as manufacturer of home built/kit aircraft. Its owner resides in Hamburg, some 625 km (390 mi) north of this small airport and there was a trio of German-registered light singles from Hamburg present as well - probably no coincidence.
