Fresh from a two-year rebuild which features a full strip and re-paint, new interior trim with leather seats and avionic refurbishment including twin GPS and integrated TAWS. And doesn't she look nice? King Island Airlines titles are only carried on the port side beneath the cockpit.

This 1971 Navajo was built about 1/3 of the way through the production run. It was registered new in Australia as VH-SAO on 23 March 1971, but it's presently sitting derelict at Yarrawonga and slowly being cannibalised. In later life it was a parachuting jump ship, as can be seen from the hand-rail on the rear fuselage, and as such was probably flogged.

Built to a 1942 order for the USAAF as 42-99331, this aircraft evidently went to the China-Burma-India theatre of war as after the war it was civilianised in India as VT-CDL, one of about 100 such. Imported to Australia and beautifully restored, it was first registered as VH-NLR on 16 April 1999.

Backtracking just after dawn on arrival from Sydney. Unlike most of the Jetstar fleet, this aircraft has had an interesting previous history. Leased from ILFC, it was built for Jetstar Asia in 2005 and made its first flight as F-WWBE. Rego 9V-JSE allocated but probably never worn as it went straight to Turkish operator Atlas Jet as TC-OGO on 18 May 2005. In about 2007 painted in Saudi Arabian Airlines colours 'though continued to operate as TC-OGO. On 21 November 2007 re-reg VH-JQW.

Mike Spaulding's brand new Warhawk/Kittyhawk was a star attraction at the Wide Bay International Airshow. Built for the USAAF as 42-104977, this aircraft served with the 49FG, named 'Punkins'. On 13 September 1943 it was shot down by a Zero at Tsili Tsili, near Finschafen, New Guinea. The wreck was recovered in 2004 and rebuilt at Wangaratta and Mareeba.

Another one of the extensive fleet of GAM Aero Commanders in for some work at the GAM hangar - it's having a survey camera fitted for a contract in Bangladesh. This 1974 Turbo Commander was initially registered N950M. It came to Australia in 2007 and was registered VH-YJP(2) on 8 February that year. Just to make things awkward, VH-YJP(1) was also an Aero Commander - a 500S Shrike Commander!

There was still a lot of dust in the air when we arrived at Broken Hill for the Antique Aeroplane Association of Australia's Auster Rally. Here we're looking east. Earlier in the week huge dust storms originating in the desert to the north west had blotted out Broken Hill and had even badly affected Sydney, 600 miles to the east. Photo taken from Cessna 175A VH-RFU.
