After wins in the Bendix Trophy air races of 1946 and 1947 for Paul Mantz in this Mustang while named "Stormy Petrel", Charles F Blair flew 3,478 miles non-stop from New York to London on 31.1.51 in the renamed "Excalibur III" at an average speed of 446mph in 7hr 48m, a record for a piston-engined aircraft. The oldest surviving Meteor in the UK; only the former EE527, preserved in Argentina, is older (prototype DG202 at the RAF Museum was an F.9/40 and never officially named Meteor). Served A&AEE and wfu at Lasham in 1953, moving to the Midland Air Museum 20 years later. Lots to see here... (note the Fairey Ultra-Light Helicopter behind)

Now restored to original 64 Sqdn colours and a highly appropriate exhibit at the Midland Air Museum as built here at Baginton by Armstrong Whitworth, like the Argosy from which this shot was taken
