USAAF photo of a rare type, the first of only four XC-108 conversions. Originally delivered as a B-17E in Feb 1942, it was converted into the XC-108 VIP transport in 1943, to serve as General Douglas MacArthur's personal aircraft, named "Bataan". Armament and armor was removed, and it was fitted with a B-17F plexiglas nose with a single machine gun with a chrome barrel. The cabin was fitted with seats, tables, cooking facilities and extra windows for use as a flying living and office space. In Oct 1945 the aircraft was stored for disposal at Walnut Ridge, AR and sold for scrap in Sep 1946.

Here is a Travel Air 3000 pretending to be a German "Fokker D-VII". It is a rare photo by Stan Staples showing NR3947 configured as a crop duster, but still painted as it was used in the movie "Men With Wings" (released in July 1938). Note the spreader system fitted below the fuselage. By 2020, more than 80 years later, this aircraft was still current on the USCAR, by now with the Historic Aircraft Restoration Museum at Creve Coeur airport (Maryland Heights, MO), still under the same registration N3947.
