NEAM, as it was known back then, acquired WL181 in 1975 after nearby RAF Acklington closed in 1974. It had languished there since being SoC in 1971, used for lifting practice by the resident rescue Whirlwinds. I'd last seen the aircraft there, a mere 48 years earlier. Its flying career saw service with Tangmere Station Flight, 34 Sqdn, CAW and Advanced Jet Refresher Squadron (Strubby) until going to 5MU in 1965, but it is now exhibited in 92 Sqdn colours.

This Meteor was delivered to the Danish Air Force in Jul-1951 as 44-499. In 1960 the serial was changed to B-499. It was withdrawn from use in Apr-1961 and struck off charge in Mar-1963. It then went into storage at Karup where it was noted 1975 to 1988. In 1988 it went into storage at the Danmarks Flymuseum at Billund where it was still noted in 1994. In Apr-2000 it arrived at the Dansk Veteranflysamling wich in Jun-2007 changed name to Danmarks Flymuseum, painted as 44-499 again.

After having extensive restoration completed by RAAF Heritage, Meteor A77-871 is now looking a picture of good health. This Meteor had a relatively uneventful career with the RAAF becoming an instructional trainer. Today though it is displayed at RAAF Wagga Wagga at the front gate.

The introduction of the F-16 was the reason to look back at the fighter tradition of the Leeuwarden wing. The F-16 is accompanied by a Starfighter of 323-squadron. The Royal Air Force kindly assisted with Meteor VZ467 in the colours of 324-squadron (code 3P) and Hunter XF435 with code 4R of 325-squadron. The two latter squadrons are no longer flying units.
