The Yak-24 (NATO: Horse) was developed with the intention of keeping pace with US helicopter designs. From 1958, the improved model Yak-24U was produced with all-metal rotors of bigger diameter, an all-metal fuselage and could carry 40 soldiers or 3,500 kg (7,716 lb) of cargo. The exact number built is unknown but production was stopped in favour of the much more capable Mil Mi-6. This is the only surviving airframe and is on display at Monino.

The Yak-24 was nicknamed the Flying Wagon. Monino's example is reported to be a Yak-24U, capable of lifting 40 troops. 40 Yak-24Us were built. This one was later marked 51 red.
