The US Army made limited use of the Dauntless as the A-24 Banshee. Their combat experience with the plane was not as successful as the Navy's. After mid-1942 it was mainly used as a trainer or in lower risk combat areas of the Pacific. Note that a similarly numbered SBD-6 Dauntless, Bu Aer 54654, is preserved in the USS Midway Museum in San Diego.

Originally built for USAAF as A-24B 42-54582. Registered in 1954 as N4488N and used by city of Portland, OR. as a mosquito sprayer. Later to Aero Flight, Inc. of Troutland, OR. as fire tanker #60. In 1971 to Pacific Aeronautical Corp. and restored as a SBD-5. To Doug Champlin in 1974, and reregistered N17241. Sold to USMC Air & Ground Museum in 1975. Put on display with fake Bureau Number 17241. Later loaned to USAF Museum, where it was restored to A-24 configuration, and is currently on display in the WW2 gallery.

The SBD-3 Dauntless had been ordered by the French navy before the fall of France in 1940. From late 1943, 32 SBD-5s were delivered to the Aéronavale and some 50 similar A-24B Banshees to the French air force. The A-24s were mostly used as trainers in Morocco, but some did see action during the liberation of France. 254700 is ex 42-54700.

The A-24 Banshee was the USAAF variant of the Navy SBD Dauntless dive bomber and the type was heavily involved in the South Pacific in operations against the invading Japanese forces. However, losses were high and the Banshee was regarded by many pilots as too slow, short-ranged and poorly armed to be effective. This example on display at the National Museum of the USAF is actually 42-54582 but is displayed as an airctaft that crashed-landed in Java and subsequently abandoned.

Built for USAAC as A-24B Banshee 42-54582. Civilianised post-war as N4488N and N17421. Retired in 1975 to MCAS Quantico Museum and displayed as an SBD-5. In 2004 restored to its correct A-24B guise and displayed at the USAF Museum Dayton OH as '115786'.
