Delivered new November 1942 to USN. Assigned to VS-22 in December 1942, then VC-22 in March 1943. To NAOT at NAS Jacksonville in September 43. To NAS Glenview Carrier Qualification Training Unit (CQTU) in 1944. While taking off from USS Sable on 24 Sept. 1944 the a/c had an engine failure and was ditched in Lake Michigan. The pilot was rescued. The aircraft was retrieved from the lake on 11 Sept. 1991. It is now on display in the Sunken Treasures display in the museum in an unrestored condition as it was found in the lake.

Having survived Pearl Harbor, it sank a Japanese warship in March 1942 but ditched into Lake Michigan in June 1943 while attempting to land on USS Sable having been relegated to training duties out of NAS Glenview. Airworthy SBD-5 at Planes of Fame Air Museum. This combat veteran was delivered on 18 Jun 1943. It went from Pearl Harbor to Espiritu Santo, being assigned as NZ5062 to No. 25 Sqn RNZAF. The unit was based at Piva Airfield from Mar 1944, flying missions over Bougainville and against Rabaul, by which time the Japanese bastion had been considerably weakened. The museum acquired USMC BuNo 28536 in 1959 and it was restored to flight in 1987. The SBD-5 was the most numerous model, with 2,965 being built. This model saw a single cowl flap on both sides and the pilot's telescopic sight deleted.

Built as 42-60817 an A-24 Banshee for use by the US Army as a target tug. Sold in 1958 to the City of Portland as N9142H for mosquito spraying and flown for them until 1965. Registered as N15749 and taken to the Naval Aviation Museum at Pensacola where the aircraft was displayed as SBD-3 Dauntless '2-S-12'. Bought by the Erickson collection in 1994 and registered (as an A-24 Banshee) N5254L, initially displayed at Tillamook, it is now fully restored to SBD-3 standard and part of the airworthy fleet at Madras.

After mid-1942 it was mainly used as a trainer or in lower risk combat areas of the Pacific. This Dauntless crashed into Lake Michigan in July 1943 whilst being flown on a carrier qualification flight by Major Edward Harold Drake, USMC. Fortunately the pilot survived and his plane was salvaged in the early 1990s, restored and is now part of this super floating museum.

Originally built for USAAF as A-24B 42-54582. Registered in 1954 as N4488N and used by city of Portland, OR. as a mosquito sprayer. Later to Aero Flight, Inc. of Troutland, OR. as fire tanker #60. In 1971 to Pacific Aeronautical Corp. and restored as a SBD-5. To Doug Champlin in 1974, and reregistered N17241. Sold to USMC Air & Ground Museum in 1975. Put on display with fake Bureau Number 17241. Later loaned to USAF Museum, where it was restored to A-24 configuration, and is currently on display in the WW2 gallery.
