The SAAF's 7 Sqd was established on 1 April 1939 as an active Citizen Force unit, but remained dormant and disbanded later that year. Re-stablished as a fighter squadron 12 January 1942 flying Curtiss Mohawks. The squadron fought in East and North Africa and took part in the invasion of Italy before returning to South Africa and Ysterplaat remaining in the Cape until finally disbanded 31 December 1994.
