This was a pre-production model that was used for flight tests from 12 Oct 61 till the first Mirage IVAs achieved operational status in Oct 64. A total of 62 aircraft were built, of which the bomber variant was retired in 1996 and the recce variants in 2005.

Resembling the Mirage III, this aircraft was a pre-production model that was used for flight tests from 12 Oct 61 till the first Mirage IVAs achieved operational status in Oct 64. The Mirage IVA was the only European military aircraft in 1964 that was capable of sustained flight at Mach 2. The Force de Frappe had nine dispersed Mirage IVA squadrons. A total of 62 aircraft were built, of which the bomber variant was retired in 1996 and the recce ones in 2005.

The second prototype of France's nuclear bomber, slightly larger than the first, made its maiden flight on 12.10.61 and spent decades in the open after retirement at the Musée de l'Air. A recent restoration has been completed and the aircraft is now displayed inside in a camouflage scheme to represent an operational example in the later years. The last Mirage IVPs were withdrawn from service in 2005
