The first aircraft to fly from the UK to Australia seen here at what is believed to be Charleville where it needed repairs. The flight had officially ended at Darwin but the crew, the Smith brothers, Shiers and Bennett travelled on to eventually reach the brothers' hometown of Adelaide via the east coast capitals. The Vimy is today preserved at Adelaide. Photo from: State Library of Queensland

Perhaps the most historically significant aircraft in Australia, this Vimy (affectionately known as God 'elp All Of Us) made the first ever flight from England to Australia in 1919. Built for the RAF as F8630, it was converted by Vickers for the England-Australia Air Race. In the capable hands of Ross & Keith Smith, Shiers and Bennett it departed Hounslow on 12 November 1919, reaching Darwin in 27 days 20 hours. G-EAOU has resided since 1958 in a purpose-built shelter at Adelaide Airport.
